In 1960 Joaquim Belsa made the first design made of Manila cane, was produced by hand, and this involved a high cost and a long period of production. These factors made it impossible to produce large series. As its designer explains, the shape of the coat rack was suggested by the observation of the sinuous shapes adopted by the irrigation hoses. In 1964 he made it again but this time he used aluminium tube and a cotton fabric lining, to avoid the vision of the welds. Each one of the bodies that constitute the object consists of two semispherical forms of different size that arise from the same piece of aluminum. The largest part is the one that is fastened to the wall by means of two nails, and the one with the smallest dimensions is left in front and is the one that performs the coat rack function. The degree of separation between the two makes it possible to hang more than one different piece (a bag, a coat, a rucksack, a wallet, etc.). Thanks to the rounded shapes of the design, the warm pieces do not suffer tears. The three bodies are joined by means of a glued piece of the same cotton fabric that covers the aluminium. At that time it was available in two versions: double and triple. Despite the change of material that Belsa made in this design, the rounded shapes, typical of objects made with Manila cane, were maintained. This demonstrates the existence of a formal harmony with the ideas of the most modern furniture at a time when Italian and Scandinavian models of an organicist nature were taken as references. Of this product, manufactured by Aresta, several series were made of about 100 copies each. A total of 10,000 copies were made of this second aluminium version. (Maria José Balcells)In 2018 we re-edited the coat rack, preserving the aluminium tube, eliminating the textile lining and changing the joining system, being able to lengthen the coat rack as much as desired.
